CVS Virtual Job Tryout (VJT) Prep: Ace Your Assessment (2024)

What is the CVS Virtual Job Tryout

The CVS VJT is a challenging assessment of your professional traits and cognitive abilities. It includes five parts, each providing CVS with insights into central aspects of you as a candidate – some examine how you function in typical work scenarios, while others evaluate professional skills.

The five sections of the CVS Virtual Job Tryout are:

  • Work with Customers & Colleagues (Situational Judgement Test)
  • What Drives You
  • Tell Us Your Story
  • Describe Your Approach
  • Ensure Quality

Pharmacy technicians will be presented will be presented with another section, “Fill Prescriptions.” Let’s dive in deeper and examine a question from each section, including CVS virtual job tryout answers that will give you an idea of what you’re facing.

Work With Customers & Colleagues

In the first step of the VJT you will be given a common daily situation which you could face while working in a CVS pharmacy. For each situation you will be given four possible courses of action, and will need to choose yourmost likelyandleast likelyaction.

The aim of these questions, called a situational judgement test (SJT), is to identify certain traits in candidates - similarly to a personality test. Let's take a look at a sample question:

An hour after the shift at the pharmacy has started, one of your colleagues calls to tell you that their son is sick, and they have to leave. It’s a busy day, and you see the rest of the team struggling to complete all the tasks.

What will you most and least likely do?

A) Check with your colleagues to see if they need any help with their tasks. Do your best to help them, while also completing your assigned tasks.

B) Go back to your workplace and speed up your pace. Make sure you complete all your tasks on time, so no one else needs to assist you because they already have many tasks.

C) Try to encourage the team members throughout this busy day. Acknowledge their difficulty but explain that you all must do your best.

D) Talk with the rest of the team and come up with a schedule for today that will enable you to divide all tasks equally so they will all be completed on time.

Most likely: D

Least likely: B

This situation is designed to measure your teamwork and flexibility in work situations. This scenario requires you to understand that the team is currently understaffed, and that the only way all tasks can be covered is if all team members adjust their schedule and try to complete them together.

Ensure Quality

In this section of the VJT your attention to detail and accuracy will be tested. You will be shown a customer’s prescription details and next to it a picture of a bottle of medication, and then be asked to identify any discrepancies between the two.

In a pharmacy there is no room for error, so even though the questions themselves might not seem particularly challenging at first, keep in mind that the smallest oversight could be costly and completing 13 of these questions perfectly under the pressure of an exam can be challenging.

Try this sample question:

What Drives You

This section allows CVS to learn about what motivates you, and your preferred work environment. You will be shown a series of paired statements and then you will be asked to click on the statement that best describes your ideal job.

To pass this section, it helps to understand CVS’ organizational culture, and the emphasis they put on intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation for work. Let’s take a look at a sample question, and what kind of answer CVS are looking for:

I would like to work where:

  1. I enjoy arriving at work every morning
  2. The pharmacy’s staff is excellent and supportive

The preferred answer is “I enjoy arriving at work every morning,” since it focuses on “Joy” which is an intrinsic motivation source, while the other option deals with your tendency to rely on others.

Tell Us Your Story

In this biodata section, you will be asked to answer questions regarding your work experience, personal traits, and skills. While you should of course answer honestly, it is important to know that there are right and wrong answers.

Describe Your Approach

This part of the VJT aims to identify your unique working style, and characteristics such as integrity and assertiveness. In each question you will be presented with two statements, for each of which you will need to choose whether it is “most like me” or “somewhat like me.” These questions can be tricky, and knowing what types of work style characteristics CVS Health is looking for through this section can be a significant help.

CVS Pharmacy Technician Virtual Job Tryout

As pharmacy technicians, you will be relied upon to use your knowledge and skills to help people get the medication they need, while assisting the pharmacists and management. The VJT for this position is similar to the pharmacist one (see descriptions and sample questions in the Pharmacist section above) but puts a greater emphasis on assessing your technical skills and includes one other unique sub-test. The VJT is built as follows -

  • Work with Customers & Colleagues (Situational Judgement Test)
  • What Drives You
  • Tell Us Your Story
  • Describe Your Approach
  • Ensure Quality

While the sections listed above are in both CVS pharmacy VJTs, the Pharmacy Tech VJT includes one more unique test that our PrepPack will prepare you for:

Fill Prescriptions

This sub-test is unique to the Pharmacy Tech position at CVS Health and will assess your basic math abilities under pressure. Although these questions are not awfully hard, you could find yourself making unusual mistakesunder the pressure of the exam. Try to answer this question within 34 seconds, to simulate the pressure of the real VJT:

How many pills should you dispense for the patient?

Prescription Information

Dosage instructions

Days' Supply Needed

2 pills, 3X per day

27

Pills per bottle
17

The correct answer is nine full bottles, and nine additional pills.

To calculate this, you should work in two steps:

First, calculate the total amount of pills the patient needs, similar to the calculation you did on the first two questions in this test:

Amount of Dispensed Pills = No. of pills taken every time X No. of times a day X Day's Supply needed

Amount of Dispensed pills = 2 X 3 X 27 = 162

Second, to calculate the number of full bottles and additional pills, you should divide the result by the number of pills per bottle.

No. of bottles = (Amount of Dispensed pills)/(Pills per bottle)= 162/17 = 9.529

This means that you will have nine full bottles. To find the number of additional pills, multiply the number after the decimal by the number of pills per bottle:

Additional pills=0.529 X 17=9

What Makes the CVS Virtual Job Tryout So Challenging?

  • The questions are misleadingly simple, but the truth is that reaching the correct answers can be tricky. CVS Health uses sophisticated predictive modelling to flag candidates that try to “please” the system. That is why it’s not recommended to answer based on a hunch or common sense.
  • Failing the CVS Virtual Job Tryout will disqualify you from re-applying for six months.
  • You need to answer fast - Even though the VJT isn’t timed, our test experts have found that responding too slowly can negatively affect your score.

The VJT is tricky and the competition for each position is huge, so being well-prepared can make all the difference and allow you to stand out from the other candidates. This is exactly why we created a specialized preparation pack that will simulate the CVS Health VJT as closely as possible, giving you the edge over the other candidates and taking you all the way to a stable and fulfilling career with CVS Health.
