Background: Evidence of a connection between adult psychological health and food intake is mounting. Student research on this relationship at universities has been lacking. This study evaluated the impact of various emotions on eating behavior and attempted to comprehend the relationship between stress and eating among medical students. The findings will be used to guide and counsel these students to safeguard them against future health risks, such as obesity and malnutrition. Methodology: In a tertiary care center in the Kanchipuram area, 440 medical students participated in a cross-sectional study with the assumption that 50% of them experience emotional eating. The study included an alpha error of 0.5%, a 95% confidence level, and a 10% non-response rate. A pretested semi-structured questionnaire was utilized to gather baseline information about the participants. The Salzburg Emotional Eating Scale questionnaire was used to evaluate eating behaviors, and data was input into Microsoft Excel. SPSS software version 25 was used for the analysis. Results: Of 418 students who responded to the questionnaire, year of study (p<0.01) showed a significant association with BMI. 5.8% of students were underweight, 62.2% normal, 25.1% overweight, and 6.9% obese. 64.4% of people ate less than normal, 8.6% ate the same amount as usual, and 27% ate more than usual when they were feeling upset.
